Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover in Fort Lauderdale consists of a combination of procedures that are specifically designed for mothers who want a tighter, firmer body following pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.

A Mommy Makeover is tailored to meet the needs of each patient; therefore, the combination of procedures that Dr. John Michael Thomassen recommends to a patient at his Fort Lauderdale office are based solely on the areas of the body that the patient would like addressed.

Essentially, a Mommy Makeover brings together several of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available in Fort Lauderdale.

Procedures commonly performed as part of a Mommy Makeover include:

  • An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
  • A breast lift without implants (mastopexy)
  • A breast lift with implants (mastopexy with Augmentation)
  • Liposuction (lipoplasty)
  • A Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty)

Mommy Makeover Procedures – Explained

Abdominoplasty

During this procedure, Dr. Thomassen removes any excess fat and skin; furthermore, in the majority of cases, he can restore separated or weakened muscles to create a firmer, smoother abdominal profile.

What to Expect During an Abdominoplasty – The Procedure

1. Anesthesia

During the surgical procedure, patients receive medication to ensure they remain comfortable.

2. The Incisions

Dr. Thomassen will create a horizontally-oriented (side-to-side) incision in the area located between the navel and pubic hairline. The length and shape of the incision created depends on the degree of correction that is necessary.

3. Removal of Excess Tissue, Fat and Skin

Dr. Thomassen removes excess tissue, fat and skin: He also uses this incision to repair and suture weakened abdominal muscles. If excess skin needs to be removed from the upper abdomen, he may need to make a second incision around the navel.

4. Closing the Incisions

Once the surgical procedure is complete, Dr. Thomassen closes the incisions using skin adhesives, sutures, clips and/or surgical tape.

Results

An abdominoplasty provides patients with a firmer, flatter abdominal contour that is proportionate to the patient’s body type and weight; however, final results are not visible immediately as they are obscured due to swelling. In addition, patients are unable to stand fully upright until their internal incisions heal. The internal healing process usually takes a week or two, at which time the results attained during the abdominoplasty will be evident.

Liposuction (Lipoplasty)

Lipoplasty slims and reshapes particular areas of the body. Liposuction accomplishes this by removing excess fat deposits; thus, improving the contours and proportions of the body.

Liposuction Surgery During a Mommy Makeover – The Procedure

1. Anesthesia

During the surgical procedure, patients receive medication to ensure they remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

2. The Incisions

Small, inconspicuous incisions are created through which Dr. Thomassen places a cannula (hollow tube) to perform the liposuction procedure.

3. Sterile Liquid is Infused

To reduce the incidence of bleeding and trauma, a sterile liquid solution is infused into the areas being treated via a cannula.

Dr. Thomassen uses a controlled back and forth motion to loosen the excess fat. Then, this dislodged fat is suctioned out of the body. The fat may be suctioned using a syringe that is attached to the cannula or with a surgical vacuum.

Results

Once the swelling and fluid retention dissipate, patients can see their improved body contour. As long as a patient practices a lifestyle that includes regular exercise in conjunction with a healthy diet, the excess fatty tissue should never return; however, if a patient does not maintain a healthy lifestyle weight gain is possible.

Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation)

This procedure involves the placement of breast implants to increase the fullness of the breasts and improve their symmetry. The implants Dr. Thomassen uses will consist of silicone or saline.

Breast Augmentation Surgery as Part of a Mommy Makeover – The Procedure

1. Anesthesia

Patients receive medication to ensure they remain asleep and comfortable throughout their procedure.

2. The Incisions

Dr. Thomassen makes the incisions he uses to place an implant in inconspicuous areas so as to minimize the occurrence of visible scarring. The type of incision necessary depends on the implants’ size, the type of implant being used, the patient’s particular anatomy as well as the patient’s/surgeon’s preference.

3. Implant Insertion and Placement

The breast implant can be placed submuscularly or subglandularly/submammary. A subglandular/submammary placement involves placing the implant over the pectoral muscle, directly behind the breast tissue; whereas, submuscular placement refers to inserting the implant into a pocket under the pectoral muscle. The insertion and positioning method Dr. Thomassen uses depends on the degree of enlargement a patient desires, the type of implant being placed and the patient’s particular body type.

4. Closing the Incisions

Dr. Thomassen uses layered sutures to close the breast tissue. He uses a skin adhesive, surgical tape and/or sutures to close the skin. As time passes, the incision lines become less visible.

Results

Patients will notice a difference in the size of their breasts directly following their Mommy Makeover procedure.

A Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

During this procedure, Dr. Thomassen removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to raise and firm the breasts. He reshapes the breasts to support their new contour. During a Mommy Makeover, many patients choose to have a breast lift and augmentation simultaneously.

1. Anesthesia

Patients receive medication to ensure they remain asleep and comfortable throughout their procedure.

2. The Incisions

Two common incision patterns that are used during a breast lift procedure include the anchor incision and the lollipop incision. The type of incision necessary depends on the results desired.

The anchor incision is used when dramatic reshaping is required due to extensive sagging. An incision is made around the areola, another incision runs straight down to the breast crease and the final incision runs horizontally along the breast crease.

The lollipop incision is used when the breast needs to be reshaped and there is just moderate sagging. An incision is made around the areola. Another incision is created that runs vertically down toward the breast crease.

3. Reshaping the Breasts

Once Dr. Thomassen creates the incisions, he can:

  • Lift and then shape the underlying breast tissue.
  • Remove excess skin on the breast.
  • Reduce the size of enlarged areolas by excising excess skin from their perimeters
  • Reposition the nipple and areola.

Closing the Incisions

Once the reshaping of the breast and removal of excess skin is complete, Dr. Thomassen tightens the remaining skin and closes the incisions. Incision lines are permanent; however, they usually fade significantly with time.

He layers sutures within the tissues of the breast to ensure the newly shaped breasts have plenty of support.

To close the skin, Dr. Thomassen may use surgical tape, sutures and/or skin adhesives.

Results

The results of a breast lift are visible immediately.

A Breast Reduction with Dr. Thomassen

Some mother’s breasts remain larger than she would like them to be or look out of proportion with the rest of her body. A breast reduction as part of a Mommy Makeover with Dr. Thomassen can provide a mother with smaller, lighter breasts. In addition, her breasts will be more proportional to her body.

The Procedure

1. Anesthesia

Patients receive medication to ensure they remain asleep and comfortable throughout their procedure.

2. The Incision

A breast reduction requires the use of the anchor incision: An incision is made around the areola, another incision runs straight down to the breast crease and the final incision runs horizontally along the breast crease.

3. Removal of Excess Tissue

Dr. Thomassen removes the excess tissue and fat by combining liposuction and manual removal techniques.

4. Nipple and Areola Relocation

Dr. Thomassen will relocate the nipple and areola to a higher location on the breast. In the majority of cases, he can keep the tissues attached so that the underlying nerves remain unaffected.
