These include expander/implant procedures, direct to implant procedures, as well as flap reconstructions like latissimus dorsi flaps and DIEP flaps. Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is most often performed with implants. The most common technique is a staged expander/implant technique. In this procedure, a special implant called a tissue expander is placed in the breast at the time of the mastectomy. The expander is deflated and allows the overlying skin to heal before expanding it and creating a breast mound. This expander is replaced 3-4 months later with a soft silicone gel implant. There are multiple examples below.

When the surgery uses a patient’s own tissue, it is an autologous reconstruction. The tissue is transferred to the chest wall to recreate a breast. Multiple flaps are available including abdominal (DIEP flap) and back (Latissimus dorsi).
